The Full Story
KURA
Our ethos is rooted in the philosophy of the word Kura across cultures. In Japanese, Kura (蔵 or 倉) refers to traditional storehouses used for preserving food, valuables, and important cultural items. In Te Reo Māori, Kura has multiple meanings all linked to heritage, knowledge, and education. In Greek, Kura (Κουρά) means healing or care, relating to concepts of well-being.
At KuraLab, this symbolic and functional meaning informs every aspect of our approach: thoughtful preservation, purposeful planning, and long-term stewardship.

Mission
At KuraLab, we are dedicated to empowering collectors and institutions with practical, sustainable, and expert-driven solutions for preserving their valuable collections. Inspired by the concept of "Kura" across cultures, we blend the wisdom of heritage preservation with modern accessibility, ensuring that cultural treasures remain protected for future generations. Our mission is to make professional collection care approachable, actionable, and environmentally responsible, bridging the gap between high conservation standards and real-world practicality.

About Us
KuraLab was founded by Katerina Laina, A-ICRI and Tamar Maor, ACR, who met while working at Tate. Together they have worked across the globe for leading institutions, organisations, and collectors sharing their skills and expertise.
They have focused their knowledge of preventive conservation and keen interest in technology and innovation into KuraLab with the aim of bringing collections care and risk management to a wider audience.
We see the collection as a living entity — not only a repository of the past, but also a narrative vessel for future generations. Our consultancy bridges the gap between high collection care standards and everyday collection realities, translating professional knowledge into intuitive, affordable, and sustainable care models.
Katerina & Tamar have worked for the following institutions, in addition to many other galleries and private collectors:
TATE, Houses of Parliament, Science Museum, V&A, Horniman Museum, British Library, Arts Council Collection, British Council Collection, The Design Museum, Guggenheim
